Jobs You Deserve Radio, hosted by Kristen Hallows

Okay so you are in a dead end job. So what right, it pays the bills. Wrong, many of us feel the weight of our jobs on our shoulders each and every day. Sometimes they can cause us insane amounts of stress and can even cause some of us to become depressed. The truth of the matter is that nobody wants to work a fast food job, or be stuck in a job where they feel they are just another worker ant taking food back for the queen. The reality is that many of us are capable of so much more, but where do we start? How do we get the information and education we need to gain more power inside of our profession?

Every week host Kristen Hallows takes us on an inspiring career journey in a show tagged as “Jobs You Deserve Radio” under the theme of “Banish the Sunday Night Blues!” Hallows’ approach to those of us stuck in jobs we dislike is that we already have the answers and her job is to ask us the questions. For those of us so stuck in the purgatory of our daily routines Hallows offers such advice, “Good news: you already have the knowledge, ingenuity and resources to achieve the results you want. You have the answers, and I have the questions!”

By tuning in, listeners will be given life changing advice that allows them to seriously realize their exponential, and how to utilize it to empower themselves within their careers. Kristen says, “Look forward to Mondays!” Most of us working adults feel quite the latter to that statement, as you are always hearing people complain about having to go back to work once the weekend is over. According to Hallows this is because they truly are unsatisfied with their careers. If you think that a career change for the better is in order for you, then you should drop Kristen a line on her next show and ask her if she has any advice to offer you, more than likely she does!

Urban Literary Review

Most people are very familiar with the term “Starving Artist”. Usually this relates to actors and actresses, musicians and more importantly writers. In today’s crazy business world it can be nearly impossible to gain recognition as a writer. Many writers succumb to the feeling that their chances of getting their works out to world are the same as their odds of picking the winning lottery numbers. However what many of these frustrated writers do not realize, is that they may just be approaching their problems in the wrong way.

Every Thursday evening Urban Literary Review invites successfully published working authors, and other industry insiders and professionals, to join them on their radio cast and recount their trials and tribulations towards gaining the success that they have garnered.

On October 4th Nakea Murray (Literary Consultant Group) will join them on the air to give advice to aspiring authors on what his agency reads and tosses. Murray will offer the audience solid approaches to their success by giving them hints and pointers as to just what literary agents look for in authors, and how you can get one; one of the biggest keys towards getting yourself a publishing contract.

Following a 30 minute stint with Murray the show will also have Treasure E. Blue, author of "Harlem Girl Lost" and “A Street Girl Name Desire" on the show to guide the listeners with advice on how he was able to self publish and sell 40,000 copies of his books before acquiring a major writing contract. For any writer who is seeking the know-how so they can become a paid professional, this show is a must listen!

Reports are submitted to the hosts every week and they sometimes even invite their “Remote Divas” on the air to share their stories with the audience.

As of late however, wine has continued to grow in stature becoming a product of obsession for many of the wealthy. Some even collect rare bottles and trade them like stocks and bonds. Some wine can even cost $15,000 per bottle and upwards. So what makes us so fond of alcoholic grape-juice? Simple, we love delicacies and foods that take long processes to create.

Listeners can call in and ask any type of wine question that they can conceive, and the good Dr. will have an educated and accurate answer that he delivers, almost lecture style. With the ability to merely smell a cork and tell you whether the grapes were grown on a hill in the shade or facing the sun, to the type of soil and sediment they may have. Dr. Bond is one of North America’s premier wine experts. For those of us who enjoy a balanced glass of chardonnay, this show is definitely worth checking out.

NFL Smackdown, football in the raw!

Spawned by the athletic doings of your favorite football stars each Sunday and of course the lengthy off-season that predicts the next season, NFL Smackdown offers a hearty dose of your favorite NLF teams and players. The show features predictions, advice, draft choices, game review and much more. It’s hard to cover this broad range of topics in such a short air-time of only 30 minutes, but the show encourages listeners to call in and join the often heated debate that surrounds many of the NFL’s premier teams and players.

Topics range from player misconduct, coaching strategies, draft choices, play calling and a wide variety of other NFL related topics. The hosts change out every week and for the most part are unknown to the public, but have an extensive knowledge of how football works. Spawned by the website www.nflsmackdown.com – which is one of the largest NFL blogs on the internet, NFL Smackdown is starting to climb up the listener favorite charts slowly but surely. Of course in a world inundated by hype, especially in sports, it can be hard to determine which show to listen to and of what substance their topics will consist.

With this show it’s rather cut and dry. For the avid sports fan the range of topics will greatly satisfy the listener and usually encourage them to call in to voice their opinion. For the person who knows little about stats, coaches and players, this show is not for you, however that doesn’t mean that football isn’t the greatest game in the world!

Meditation online, really?

Some of us just tend to get stressed out throughout the day, others can get anxious, and yet even more of us can get really angry. Combine all three of these emotions and you have a water balloon meeting a hot needle. So what can we do to keep from bursting inside and driving ourselves to the brink of madness? Well it’s not really that bad, but it can sure seem like it is sometimes.

This is where Peter and Andrea Tongue come to the rescue. Using a rather unconventional method, these two host one of the few online meditation radio shows. Yes you heard right, meditation online, how can this be? Well according to the laws of meditation, it is the experiencing of the total oneness of your self. Meditation is in itself a selfish yet humble experience. Selfish because you need to know your self to better gain harmony, humbling because you get to see why you do the things you do that cause you to feel unhappy.

Peter and Andrea explore this forbidding mental realm in great lengths for an hour a week on their show. Using what they call the “Guided Meditation Experience” they take willing listeners on a journey all over the metaphysical international plains. Focusing on the inner-self, and on the release of emotions which bring us down and scatter our happiness. This show is not for those who do not have an open mind; meditation requires you to look into yourself. Peter and Andrea are always on hand to answer listeners questions live, they also write in back to question in their blogs, effectively guiding their listeners on the life-long journey towards self betterment.

William Constantine, “Eternal Enlightenment”

Serving as a positive force for those who are seeking to change their lives for the better, in enters the expert and soothing advice of one of the world’s most respected mediums. William Constantine’s show, “Divine Awakening” attempts to ask its listen to try and take a look deep inside of themselves, and see if there are spirits which are assisting them and those which may be misguiding them.

Constantine experience a rough childhood in a foster care home, where to say the least, was not the ideal surroundings for a young man to grow up in. From his youngest age William recalls getting advice from spirits and eventually learning to trust the words of the other-worldly over the living. On his show he boldly delves into topics that he says give the listener a good psychic workout. Of many metaphysical topics out there, Constantine sticks to what he knows best, the spirit world, mediums and after-death. Listeners can call in and ask questions on the air, or write to William in his blog.

The medium is always seeking to assist those in need and aide them on their path to enlightenment. For him it’s his calling on this planet. According to William his connection with the spirits has gotten so strong and unique over the years that he has trouble going out sometimes. He claims that he gets a very strong physical feeling just from hearing a person’s voice and knows what spirits or guides are with them. Sometimes it bears down on him so much that he becomes physically ill. For those seeking true advice, and perhaps some closure on relatives or friends who are recently deceased, then this show is for you.

Positive Vibes

Let’s face it, life is stressful. We spend our time worrying about everything, from our weight, to our kids, to our job, to the world and what effect we’re having on it. But on this show, Jackee Cahee tries her darndest to get us feeling better with positive, encouraging, uplifting talk.

The most recent topic was on getting rid of mental and emotional clutter, two things that if we don’t take control of them can vastly damage our lives. Previous talks have included tips on how to be a better listener (citing that less is more when it comes to conversation, and teaches about how we can connect with others if we listen); learning to forgive, and the burden and strain of acts weighing on our soul if we do not actually obtain the means to do so; being a ‘control freak’, and how our lack of control panics us unnecessarily; the importance and power of words, and why what we say affects others in ways we couldn’t even imagine, even those who are not directly related to the conversation; and a lesson on patience, the most important virtue a human being can have.

While the show does talk about religion and prayer, it is not strictly religious; rather it focuses on a wholesome approach in general to bettering your life and improving any situation you may seem to be ‘stuck in’. Other shows talk about negative thinking and how it impacts your life, being mired in a rut and not obtaining any sort of release, or determination and how having it can change our lives innumerable ways.

This show does not seem to have a set schedule and airs whenever the author feels like it, but she always gives a week’s advance as notice. She also has a website where you can find out more information about both the radio blog and positive living.

Stop Sugar Shock!

This show is about sugar- literally and figuratively. The name comes from a book written by Connie Bennett, and the topics of the show have to do with health problems and eating in a healthy manner.

Connie has talked in the past about food sensitivities, and how, if you are ill, the potential culprit may be what you ate that didn’t agree with you; about the history and composition of Twinkies, one of the few foods that has been lauded as capable of withstanding nuclear attack; about mindless eating, and how it can affect not only your health, but your psyche as well; about longevity, and different tips from different sources that talk about how it really is possible to live to one hundred. One episode offers a soda challenge, asking listeners to give up soda for an entire summer, and another discussed corporate involvement in food advertising, and showed how they were targeting children with unhealthy snacks.

The episodes aren’t all about food: they’re about your mind as well. One called, “Reinvent Yourself: How to Make Your Dream Life Real” held an interview with Karen Quinn, author of Wife in the Fast Lane, and discussed goal-setting and achievement. In another show, Roberta Ruggiero, founder of the Hypoglycemia Support Foundation, talked to listeners about the condition and how it can affect your lifestyle without you knowing it - and why it’s considerably misunderstood by the public.

Connie holds her show weekly at 1 p.m., on Tuesdays.

Motherhood Uncensored

Having children is at the same time very difficult and very rewarding. Kristen Chase’s show is called Motherhood Uncensored because of her “no-more-Mrs.-Nice-Mom” approach, which, she says, is “not for the faint of heart.” A former college professor and musician, this mom is turning things around in blog radio with her witty and informative broadcasts- and her guests are there to back her up.

Previous broadcasts have included wise topics like, “Back to School From the Flip Side: The Down and Dirty From the Teachers”, where teachers sat in and discussed what they thought parents needed to know when it came to the first day of school and all things involved; “Where is the Love? Being a Good Parent Means Being a Good Spouse”, which discusses the conflicts that can come about with trying too hard to be either; “If There’s No Heaven, Where Do We Go? How to Parent Without Religion,” which discussed a recently released book, Parenting Without Belief, which brings up the quandaries of raising children without religion. Another show talked about “mommy guilt”, which raised the issue of parents looking too hard at what others were doing and couldn’t quite figure out what was best for their own kids.

Kristen Chase presents in an open-minded and no-holds-barred manner a variety of information that parents are sure to find refreshing and not in the least bit sugarcoated. In today’s world where millions of products are marketed at parents and almost all of them can seem very confusing, it’s a breath of fresh air to find someone who tells it like it is. You can listen to her show bi-monthly (usually every nine days) at 6:00 p.m.

Zoe Pound Radio

Music is a tough business- we all know this. If you’ve ever tried to sell yourself to a major label, attract fans, use your instrument to pay the rent, or even get a gig in a tiny coffeehouse where hardly anyone’s going to see you, you know that the competition can be fierce, and you have to take anything you can get. Zoe Pound Radio, run by self-named Mz Run Thangz, is a radio blog whose purpose is to get some exposure for independent musicians.

While certain episodes are titled “Gotta Eat” and focus more on giving advice to young musicians who need to figure out a way to balance art and life, most of the shows allow for user call-ins that let them perform live on the station. Certain shows have featured interviews with hip-hop artists and one thing the show can claim is a sense of continuation and an interest in new releases. The music you hear on this station probably hasn’t been heard anywhere else. Other times, people more involved with the business side of the music come on to give the listeners advice on self-promotion. People are featured to review the music and the director herself does so as well.

While there doesn’t seem to be any set pattern for when the show occurs, it does occur many times weekly, if not every day for a lot of days in a row. It’s been going on for a couple of months and happening nearly every day. If you want to get an edge on the latest in hip-hop, my advice is that you soar on over to Zoe Pound Radio and catch the latest tunes.

Inside Scoop Live

Inside Scoop Live is about writing, but not necessarily about news stories. Their main focus is on up-and-coming or newly published authors, who are invited onto the show to discuss their books with the show’s host.

Far from being dull, the show touches on just about every topic imaginable. They cover social issues, financial advice, romance, self-help novels, books challenging or championing moral causes, and many more. This week’s interview was with Adra Young about her new book, The Everyday Living of Children and Teens Monologues. Her book features fifty-one monologues with directives designed for young women and men who are aspiring actors and actresses. Previous guests have included Steven Paul Mark, whose book, Drift, is a mysterious and thrilling action story that was published in March; J.D. Tynan, a romance and suspense writer; Frank McGee, who told a tale of the Colwell brothers in his book, A Song For The World; Paul Holton, whose novel, Saving Babylon, talks about life as a soldier in Iraq; and Michael Holloway Perrone, who has made a name for himself as a gay male author and recently published A Time Before Me, a book that deals with that particular genre.

Inside Scoop Live offers witty commentary and a fresh look at writing from new authors, who often go unrecognized for a long period of time as they’re waiting for their novels to catch on. The interviews are conducted with humor and grace and listeners often find themselves captivated by these charming and hopeful young artists.

The Mo Show

This aptly named series is hosted by a guy named Mo. Mo doesn’t seem to have a particular topic - he’s considers himself part of the category of “fun”. He’s also all over the place, which is why listeners enjoy his shows. Some shows with a united theme can peter out over time as less information becomes available, but Mo keeps it fresh by making sure, every week, to deliver a fresh batch of comments on whatever strikes his fancy.

To set the times he is just spouting off from the other times when he’s being serious and avidly pursuing a topic, Mo labels the shows where he is just “rambling.” Topics he has covered include: the politics and ideas behind “Made in China”, a discussion on Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the variations in classic sitcoms like Gilligan’s Island and I Dream of Jeannie, weird names for places around the U.S. (from churches to cities), blogging memes and their purpose in the blogosphere, and the roles that cats play in our lives.

Mo also has a weblog at Blogspot that goes into greater details about upcoming shows and preps listeners for the veritable radio feeding frenzy that is occurring on the site. From the number of comments he gets, it’s apparent that he’s popular, and it’s not difficult to see why. Mo is what we as listeners would call an audibly flexible guy- he can spout off on anything, but you can tell he really cares. Listen to his show at 4 p.m. every Wednesday.

It's a Doggone Shame!

Sometimes it takes courage to be a minority in a sea of loud voices that appear to be pressuring you to be just like them. In this radio show, host YahDah is taking radio where it supposedly hasn’t gone- he is addressing issues that he considers to be taboo in the black community.

The topics that he discusses have to do both with current issues facing the black world and those which are more historically placed. On one show he discussed the history and theft of black land in the United States, with commentary stemming from the thoughts of John Jackson and Dr. Raymond Winbush. In another, “Call to the Elders,” he discussed the state of black leadership in this country and his opinions on how it ought to change. He has done two series- one, “Does Race Matter?”, had to do with whether race was a strong factor in the way people perceived others, and the second, “It Takes A Village,” had to do with community, and how the sense of it, and how it’s been lost, has taken its toll on us as a society. He touches on topics like divorce and its importance in societal life and Christianity and its importance in the black community.

YahDah’s focus on social awareness and cultural differences are not meant to set African-Americans apart as a race; rather, he is encouraging people to look at the similarities among themselves, no matter what their skin color, while maintaining that skin colour is still an important issue in today’s world.

The show airs weekly on Wednesdays at 4:30 p.m.
