Home Schooling 101
With the deteriorating level of education being provided by our public school system there has been a huge surge in the numbers of concerned parents who are choosing home schooling for their children. The reasons for the increase in home schooling are numerous and include not only the physical danger that kids attending public schools face today or the overall lower test scores that are being recorded on college entrance exams such as the SAT, but also the fact that studies show that in a 6 hour school day an average child can expect to receive less than 10 minutes of individual instruction as teachers are forced to deal with larger classes and must devote additional time per student to the kids who are causing problems.
There is a wealth of information about home schooling available today via the Internet and local community groups but nothing takes the place of getting the straight facts from someone who has been there and done that. Evan Miller is just such a person. She is a mother of six who has home schooled all of her children with three having graduated and three still in school.
Starting with the basics of how to set up your curriculum and schedule for your child’s grade level and moving along to developing that curriculum in the most cost-effective way, to how to deal with issues such as ensuring that your student learns appropriate socialization skills and specific methods to teach classes such as math, Mrs. Miller is a pleasant and knowledgeable resource.
By bringing in qualified guests to assist with a particular topic Miller provides an excellent starting point for those who want to start home schooling or can use some additional information and tools to provide a more effective and personalized learning environment for their family.
